Day 37: Beech Grove, KY to Rough River Lake, KY; 70mi; 2425mi

July 1, 2010

What a great day to be riding your bike across the country.  I felt like today we had everything going for us.  For starters, we woke up in a house that we knew the owner’s of!  What an odd experience that was to have people care about us in the morning.  I felt so happy when I woke up that I ended up having a piece of birthday cake for breakfast.  Happy Birthday Jessica.

After we drove back into Beech Grove, we had an interview with the local newspaper and a radio call-in.  I felt like a celebrity when my friend called me and asked where we were, and even better when we found out that he works on our route.  This was the second familiar face in two days, so you can’t blame me for having trouble fighting homesickness.

The ride was Kentucky rolling hills once again today- nothing killer but you have to pay attention lest you struggle up one at five miles an hour.  It was business as usual until we got to Whitesville where the highlight of the ride to this point came: we had a visitor.  Norma Henry calls herself our “groupie” but she is everything we dream of when we say we want to raise awareness.  After she saw us in the media this spring she went to a kickoff in Bowling Green and has read every blog we have written.  What a treat it was to have a new face and someone to share the ride with.  The miles flew as we tackles some hills or as she says, “opportunities to build character.”  We even got to show off our singing skills as we whipped out some crowd-pleasers such as “Friends in Low Places” and “Folsom Prison Blues”.

To top off this great experience, we were visited by Mitch’s dad with a cooler of fresh fruit and ended the day at Rough River with Tyler’s parents and a lake to swim in (followed by steak).  What a day, what a day.  I say that i’m struggling across the country to support the cause I feel for but today was more like a vacation and the perfect Kentucky summer day.  I’m so excited to get to Etown tomorrow that I think I’ll go floss my teeth!  Chaz Mouse!
